Ketosis is the most common metabolic disease in high-performance dairy cows during the first 6-8 weeksof lactation. Its main symptoms include an excessive amount of so-called ketone bodies in a cows bodyfluids. Ketone bodies consist of -hydroxybutyric acid (HBA), acetoacetic acid, and acetone. HBA is themain component with its share of the total volume of ketone bodies in the blood of about 70%. Besides, since hyperketonemia is a typical production disease for high-yielding cows, in which the animal haselevated levels of ketone bodies in the blood, milk, and urine, with often reduced glucose levels, but doesnot yet show clinical signs. Thus monitoring the blood ketone and glucose becomes of great significancefor cows.
